say the nra uses money, power, scare tactics to hold lawmakers hostage to the agenda opposing gun regulations. i want to bring in richard painter and the law professor of minnesota and joining us from minneapolis who wrote an opinion piece, an op ed in "the new york times," and a protection racket where people are controlled by organized criminals, corrupt politicians. when you hear the head of the nra today say that gun laws are not the answer it really is arming people, arming somebody in that school that could have saved lives, what is your response? >> well, we -- of course, should focus on mental health issues. we should have fewer violent movies and video games and have better security in our schools, but nothing is going to change the fact that the last thing those children saw if they looked up, and i hope they didn't, is the end of a weapon manufactured by his financial backers. lapierre says if one of those teachers had a weapon they could have killed the gunman and could have saved lives and that was the potential outcome had there been someone armed in that school. >>

thanks for being with us. i want to start with this. your reaction to the nra and you heard of lapierre's statement to the nra. what's your thought on the plan put out there to put guns in schools. >> first, richard, thank you for having me. my reaction to the statement yesterday is that i'm disappointed, but not surprised, candidly, and i think we have to stay very focused here and not be put off by the kind of distraction that was put forth yesterday. we certainly need to have concrete plans to make sure our schools are safe, but the notion of adding more guns as a solution is wrong minded and we shouldn't be distracted by the comments yesterday. this is what i believe they were. >> how practical is the idea put forth? the department of labor saying that the average salary for a police officer is about $55,000. there's about 100,000 public schools across the country and it would mean $5 billion if the plan were to be carried out. >> i don't think there's anything more precious than our kids so we do need to make sure that we change and have plans to address school safety, but i don't

is already gearing up for a fight. fox news reports that the nra is expected to push back soon. they'll hold a news conference on friday. and republican governors still aren't convinced that guns are the problem. governor jan brewer says quote, i'm not sure additional gun control is something that needs to be addressed. i don't know how we get our arms around it. don't know how to get your arms around it? how about disarming those who shouldn't have weapons? and virginia governor bob mcdonald seems to think there are many solutions to be pursued. but gun control. >> could you imagine ever supporting a ban to limit the sale of assault rifles and clips to private citizens? >> well, i think we ought to look at a number of things -- >> are you hoping? >> i don't think that's the first place you look. because first of all we don't have all the facts. >> we don't have all the facts. but we have the facts that matter. 27 people are dead. and we should do everything we can to prevent it from happening again. joining me now is congresswoman diana degette, democrat from colorado. and former pennsylvan

and the big majority of nra members in favor of at least starter reforms to our gun laws, the biggest barrier to reforming our laws now may just be the pervasive common wisdom that it's not even worth it to try. modern history defies that common wisdom. but it persists. it persists, maybe. now, the last time we talked on the show about the long, long and long lost modern history and bipart san gun reforms was in the wake of the tucson shooting this past weekend. and in the wake of that shooting, the tucson shooting, this was the general assessment. gun control dead. a nonstarter. shootings unlikely to change laws. don't expect any changes. that was our random survey of the headlines last january after the tucson shootings. at least if you asked the beltway shooting gods. now it seems like the common wisdom may be less certain. look at the headlines now. and it's more like this. debate on gun control is revived. lawmakers call for tougher gun laws in wake of new town massacre. gun control debate simmers after sandy hook massacre. nobody is saying it's going to be easy for our country to reform

differently. >> what about the nra? >> well, the nra is an organization that has members who are mothers and fathers. and i would expect that they've been impacted by this as well. and hopefully they'll do some self-reflection. and here's what we know -- that any single gun law can't solve all these problems. we're going to have to look at mental health issues. we're going to have to look at schools. there are going to be a whole range of things that joe's group looks at. we know that issues of gun safety will be an element of it. and what we've seen over the last 20 years, 15 years, is the sense that anything related to guns is somehow an encroachment on the second amendment. what we're looking for here is a thoughtful approach that says we can preserve our second amendment, we can make sure that responsible gun owners are able to carry out their activities, but that we're going to actually be serious about the safety side of this; that we're going to be serious about making sure that something like newtown or aurora doesn't happen again. and there is a big chunk of space between what t

television right now, they don't want to come on. they're hiding away, as are members of the nra and all the usual suspects when these terrible things happen. are you detecting, senator, that there is change in mood? are you hoping this is a tipping point? >> yes, i hope so, piers. i had to do a brief segment on "meet the press" yesterday morning. and afterwards, i probably got 20 phone calls at home here in washington. very unusual, people from washington and california calling and saying we want to help with this. it's got to stop. i even had one man who was a member of the nra who said i have an ar-15, and i'm going to get rid of it. i'm a hunter, and i want you to do something about these assault weapons. so i'm going to do my level best to try. i did it once before in 1993. we sat down and we wrote a bill, and that bill passed the senate. chuck schumer introduced it in the house. it passed. it was not amended. it was passed. and it went to the president. president clinton signed it, and it was the law for ten years. and over time, it began to wind down the supply of these weapons. a

the nra to the table in a very sort of high pressure timetable right now? >> reporter: this struck me because when the president was asked about this during questioning, he said that he has faith basically in members of the nra. so making it clear that he's going to be trying to appeal to actual members as mothers and fathers, that he said when you look at the nra, there are a lot of people there who want to be sure that people go through background checks, they want to make sure that kids are safe. he thinks that there is sort of a place where nra members don't want to see military style weapons in the hands of people, a period or might do harm. that was sort of where he was looking and using the bully pulpit. friday, we'll be hearing from the nra for first time. they have been saying no comment. they have remained mum following the shooting in connecticut on friday. but this is just a really a sign now that things are very much heating up here, that we will be hearing from them on friday and that we heard from the president getting specific today, brooke. >> nra releasing a statemen

with the coalition of gun owners, we used a republican pollster to poll gun owners and nra members, you get from 70 to 90%, depending on the common sense issue we could do that would make our country safer. let me give you one example. roughly 40% of the guns sold in america are sold in what's called the secondary market, in other words, private sales. where there's no federal registration at all, where people with criminal backgrounds, where you could get somebody on the terrorist, no-fly list who can't get on a plane, but could go to the secondary market and buy weapons. overwhelmingly 84% of gun owners -- 82% of gun owners in america believe that should change. changing that alone makes a difference. i'll give you the specific example how. up with out of two women that are murdered with a gun are murdered by someone they know well. in states that don't allow people to trade in private gun sales or gun shows and the like, that number drops by 40%, because the people with the intention to do wrong, or who have a misdemeanor dofl abuse can't buy guns in america, makes people safer. >> you have had
